DipFS provides an in-depth exploration of the important concepts of financial education and how to apply them in achieving longer-term financial stability. 

Subject Requirements

  • GCSE English - Grade 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths - Grade 4 or above

Intent

From Key Stage 4 students are able to learn financial studies at Saint George’s. The aim of the course at Key Stage 5 is for students to be informed, confident and interested in achieving their lifestyle aspirations through successful management of finances.

Implementation

By the end of Key Stage 5, all students should understand the role of financial services and be able to challenge what they offer. The knowledge gained from the Financial Studies pathway enables students to increase their flexibility in their choices and understand others' choices based on their beliefs, attitudes and values including in Key Stage 5 looking at Islamic finance. In Year 12 students begin to understand the value of money and how needs, wants and aspirations are dependent on situations beyond their control. Students develop self-awareness as they begin to understand their own risk tolerance, how this can affect them and why they need to be mindful of others' risk tolerance levels in relation to their finances. In the course at Key Stage 5 students become aware of how different people interact with the diverse range of financial services available and are able to appreciate and consider are able to consider the impact of external factors on a person’s finances.

 

We ensure that SEND and disadvantaged children are given the necessary support in class to fully access the Curriculum and that equal opportunities are given to all.

Impact

Financial Studies students will have opportunities to develop their cultural and social capital through engaging in real-world class discussions, visits to the City of London and London Institute of Banking and Finance and networking with guest speakers from Financial Services such as The Bank of England and Wealth Management. The students will have opportunities to understand government and law-making as well as how global politics and economies influence our everyday lives. This will give all students the understanding of society to flourish in the wider community following their completion of studies. 

For students seeking to continue in education, DipFS provides a foundation for further study in business and finance-related disciplines, as well as a wide range of other commercial or not-for-profit sectors. This course will benefit anyone looking to enter a career in finance, management and accountancy.

For students who choose to move straight into employment, DipFS may support access to employment in areas such as insurance, banking, office administration, accountancy, or in the voluntary sector such as with Citizens Advice.

In all aspects of the financial studies journey, British Values are learnt from considering the background of different people, how their views and political preferences affect their decisions and values to challenging each other’s views in order to gain a greater understanding of why people act in the way they do in vibrant class discussions. We look at and consider the rule of law within the sustainability of the financial services industry and how providers have to act ethically in the consumer’s best interest. We accept that people will make their own choices and have the option to make their own choices, based on their religion, culture, upbringing and preferences, we take this into consideration when discussing the best decisions, a person could make given their financial situation.

Year 12 Financial Studies Topic Information

The IFS Level 3 Certificate in Financial Studies (CeFS) covers the core disciplines of financial education. The qualification provided a foundation for continued study within the finance sector and a wide range of other business-related disciplines.

Many students go on to study subjects such as accounting, business, finance and banking at university or through further vocational training.

Students can use the qualification as a stepping stone towards future employment within the finance sector, gaining a valuable understanding to support entry to employment in a range of varied roles.

Year 13 Financial Studies Topic Information

The Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies (DipFS) is for students who have already achieved the Certificate in Financial Studies (CeFS).

Building on the knowledge gained in CeFS, this course enables students to develop and enhance their financial knowledge and skills by applying them to the wider financial environment.

DipFS instils further knowledge to support progression to university to study subjects such as accounting, business, finance and banking.  It can also be the launchpad to an entry-level career within the financial sector ensuring that learners have a broad financial understanding and knowledge.

Assessments

At Key Stage 5 Certificate (CeFS) and Diploma in Financial Studies DipFS0 there is no coursework and the students are examined on the following topics throughout the course.

Year 12 Part A: Multiple-Choice Questions Part B: Written Paper
  100 marks. 100 marks.
 

35 multiple-choice questions in a 45-minute examination.

Pre-release case study requiring essay responses in a 105-minute examination. This will also assess spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) through the essay responses.
 

Year 13 Unit 1 and Unit 2 Unit 3 and Unit 4
  200 marks. 200 marks.
 

Part A: 35 multiple-choice questions in a 45-minute examination. 


Part B: pre-release case study requiring essay responses in a 105-minute examination. This will also assess spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) through the essay responses.

Financial Studies Future Paths

The financially-related content of DipFS serves as a strong grounding for undergraduate study within finance and business-related disciplines, with many students going on to careers in accounting, business, finance and banking. 

The skills developed and enhanced during the course provide valuable study skills appropriate for these disciplines and others, and students have pursued a wide range of other undergraduate courses following this qualification. 

Financial education is also supportive of the personal and financial skills that underpin clear decisions about progression options and life as an undergraduate.

Achieving the qualification will allow students to access further and higher education opportunities in courses such as Investment and retail banking law, accountancy, finance, marketing and procurement as well as access apprenticeships at level 4 and above.

Study material will be provided by the exam board and all students will have access to online materials through LIBF.
