Psychology

Psychology is the study of and explanation of human behaviour; it is interested in investigating what factors determine human behaviour and the scientific research into these factors. Psychology aims to provide explanations for different aspects of human behaviour and is focused on where relevant development treatments or therapies are to support humans.  

Subject Requirements

  • GCSE English - Grade 5 or above*
  • GCSE Maths - Grade 5 or above
  • *Or GCSE Psychology - Grade 5 or above in place of either GCSE English or GCSE Maths

 Intent

Students will study a range of fascinating topics including psychopathology social influence, schizophrenia, memory, forensic psychology and biopsychology. Within each topic, they will analyse key pieces of psychological research and theories which often offer competing explanations (for example, considering genetic versus environmental theories). You will also discuss a number of key issues and debates which run throughout the subject such as determinism, reductionism, gender and cultural bias. They will study the range of research methods psychologists use and evaluate how effective they are.

Implementation

The study of Psychology at A level introduces students to psychological theories, research studies and research methods, enabling them to develop analytical, interpretation and evaluation skills using a variety of interactive and stimulating teaching and learning strategies. In lessons, students will actively engage with the relevant articles and psychological literature using it in discussions and debates.  They will also learn how to design, run and report on their own psychological investigations gain a critical appreciation of the research methods used and be able to make informed judgements about the validity and reliability of a piece of research.

We ensure that SEND and disadvantaged children are given the necessary support in class to fully access the Curriculum and that equal opportunities are given to all.

Impact

Successful students in this subject typically, enjoy challenges and being outside their comfort zone, they are self-reflective and self-motivated learners, thriving on discussion and debate. These are transferable skills which employers and Higher Education Institutions actively seek.

Psychology Future Paths

Psychology offers a foundation for Higher Education in medicine (in combination with science subjects), social sciences, sports science, humanities, business, law and education.  It also offers a route into vocational study in fields including social work, nursing (and associated careers in healthcare such as midwifery, occupational health and speech and language therapy), education and childcare. Psychology A level is a good basis for progression directly into employment in many areas, particularly those working with people: the police and emergency services, child care, customer service, advertising, sales and many others
