Lunchtime
There are two possibilities at lunch-time:
A pupil may use the cashless-catering cafeteria service
A pupil may bring sandwiches
In addition the school cafeteria is open during the morning break. All pupils remain on the school site at lunch-time.
Attendance:
Parents will receive a text message or phone call via Truancy Call if their child has not registered in school. Students who are absent are required to bring a note of explanation on their return. When a student is likely to be absent for more than a day or two the school asks to be informed.
The school does not approve holidays during term time.
It is the responsibility of the parent to inform the school if the child has been suffering from an infectious disease.
Late Arrival:
Parents are asked to see that their child leaves home in good time to arrive punctually. Lateness without good reason may lead to detention.
Students who arrive after Registration report to the Student Support Office to ‘sign in’. Students needing to leave early or to be out of school for part of the day – to attend a medical appointment for example – ‘sign out’ by reporting to the Student Support Office.
Transport:
The arrangements for school buses and for pupils travelling with season tickets on public transport are made by the Area Education Office and parents are asked to contact them directly, at:
West Kent Area Office,
17, Kings Hill Avenue, Kings Hill,
West Malling, ME19 4UL
Pupils are welcome to bring their cycles to school. A pass is issued to those whose parents request that they come by bicycle. The Governors can accept no responsibility for the safety of the bicycle. Parents bringing their children to school by car are asked not to turn into Meadow Road as this causes considerable congestion at the beginning and end of the school day and could make it difficult for the emergency services to reach the school.
Prefects:
Prefects are appointed to serve from the Easter in their Lower Sixth year for a year. They play an important part in helping the Head and the staff in the smooth running of the school and their role is seen predominantly as one of service to the school. It gives those who are appointed the opportunity to experience leadership and to exercise responsibility. Prefects are also seen by younger pupils as ‘models’ which, in measure, they are likely to imitate.
At Saint George’s Sixth Formers who are interested in undertaking the role of Prefect are invited to apply for appointment and are interviewed by the Head. From the number of those appointed a Head Boy, a Head Girl and deputies are appointed.
Discipline:
The general discipline of the school is based on the orderliness needed for the school to operate smoothly and on the consideration necessary for other people in sharing the school. A high standard of behaviour and courtesy is expected from students at all times. Students represent the whole school when travelling to and from school and whenever they are in school uniform.
Additional work, detention after twenty-four hours’ notice, and placing a student ‘On Report’, when work and behaviour are closely monitored for a period, are strategies commonly used. Parents are involved at an early stage when problems arise.
Occasionally a student will be sent home for a brief ‘cooling off’ period and parents will be invited to see the Headteacher to discuss their return. In extreme cases, a student will be formally excluded and reference made to the Governors.
Complaints and Inspection of Documents:
The Curriculum Statement and the relevant statutory documents, along with the schemes of work and the syllabuses in use, are kept available in school, and may be inspected on application to the Head.
In the event of any complaint, the matter should be raised first with the relevant teacher or with another senior member of staff. Full details of the Complaints Procedure are available for inspection at the school and can be downloaded in the policies section of the website.
