Physical Education

Subject Leader: Mr J Cunningham - cunninghamj@saintgeorgescofe.kent.sch.uk

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness”.

At St Georges, we provide PE lessons from specialised PE teachers with experience teaching high-quality Physical Education across the trust schools in Primary and Secondary, along with high-quality indoor and outdoor facilities.

Intent

Based on the national curriculum at Saint George’s Primary Phase, we deliver “A high-quality physical education curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities”. We aim to provide students with tools to become physically confident and improve their social skills and support the development of their health and fitness.

Our Whole School Aims include:

  • Develop skills and understanding of achieving in a broad range of physical activities
  • Be physically active for sustained periods of time in some vigorous exercise
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Understand how to lead healthy, active lives

Children will have the opportunity to reflect upon their performances and give feedback to others. Children learn teamwork and problem-solving through shared experience. PE and school sports will also be used to further embed the school's core values.

Implementation

At St George’s, we provide PE lessons from specialised PE teachers with experience teaching high-quality Physical Education across the Trust schools in both Primary and Secondary, along with high-quality indoor and outdoor facilities. These lessons are delivered once a week. Further PE lessons are delivered by class teachers, following the PE scheme of work and Quigley curriculum for Physical Education.

See below for information across each Key Stage.

Impact

PE at Saint George’s is taught with the foundations of living a healthy active lifestyle and the benefits that arise from this. Giving children the skills and confidence to pursue varied physical activities through each key stage. Learning the necessary skill set to do skills in isolation through semi-competitive and fully competitive environments and continue progressing to prepare for PE in secondary school. The curriculum along with a range of activities and in-house competitions, as well as competitive sporting fixtures for KS2, inspire children to succeed, further develop and embed the school’s core values, whilst at the same time building character development.

PE in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Early Years will initially undergo the BEAM programme, which focused on screening gross motor skills and physical development in young children. More information can be found here: https://www.kentcht.nhs.uk/product/beam

Students will then use PE lessons to explore fun ways to develop the fundamentals of PE such as:

  • Gross motor development (throwing, catching, kicking etc.)
  • Spatial Awareness and Physical Application
  • Balance and Agility Basics
  • Body Movement using Dance

PE in Key Stage 1 (KS1)

Students will develop fundamental motor skills and develop confidence in a broad range of agility and coordination skills. They will have chances to engage in competition against themselves and peers, as well as cooperative team games along with physical activities.

Pupils will be taught to:

  • Master basic movements including running, throwing, catching etc with a wide range of fun physical activities and games.
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending and teamwork.
  • Develop balance and agility through basic Gymnastic movements and master landing and jumping
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

PE in Key Stage 2 (KS2)

Pupils will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. Students will take part in communicating, collaborating, and competing with each other to solve problems. Students develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. Students will link sporting skills to competitive situations and practise a version of sports games.

Pupils will be taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination with linking skills.
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking (outwitting opponents) and defending (stopping)
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team (Outdoor Adventurous Activity OAA)
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best (Sports days and own lesson measuring)
Swimming and Water Safety

Swimming instruction will be provided in Key Stage Two.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke.
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Progression

We develop our pupil’s Physical Education understanding through essential skills; growing their depth of knowledge year after year. We are able to monitor their progress and allocate extra support and adaptations to the curriculum for pupils to maintain a strong Physical Education.

SEND Information

PE lessons are adapted for SEND and more able pupils are challenged and given opportunities to lead and demonstrate.
