Modern Foreign Languages

Subject Leader: Mr E Cave cavee@saintgeorgescofe.kent.sch.uk

Learning a foreign language should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world and provides an opening to other cultures. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for students to communicate for practical purposes & learning new ways of thinking. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages.

Intent

Our aim is to introduce students to language learning and develop their curiosity about other cultures. Students are given the opportunity to learn French & Spanish from specialised language teachers. We aim to stimulate students in learning languages and develop their confidence and understanding preparing a foundation for studying modern language at key stage 3.

Our Whole School Aims include:

  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when children are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • Broaden children’s vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied

Implementation

At St George’s, we provide language lessons from experienced and specialised language teachers. These lessons are delivered once a week following the language scheme of work and linking to the Quigley curriculum for languages. Students are taught French & Spanish for three terms each.

MFL Ambassadors, who are students from Saint George’s Secondary School, will also support with language lessons at various times during the year to share their expertise with primary school students.

Impact

Languages at Saint George’s are taught with the main aim of developing students’ interest and giving them the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the wider world through the learning of languages. We also aim for students to have a strong foundation of key vocabulary in both French & Spanish in preparation for key stage 3.

Modern Foreign Languages in Key Stage 1 (KS1)

Students will become familiarised with basic language in both French and Spanish. They will have an opportunity to practise phrases used in everyday conversations, which will increase their confidence when speaking in a foreign language.

The main topics that will be covered in these years are:

  • Greetings and introducing oneself
  • Colour vocabulary applied to animals/stationery/school
  • Numbers and age
  • Culture and festivals

Modern Foreign Languages in Key Stage 2 (KS2)

Students will revise the vocabulary they have learned previously and apply descriptions to family members and places. In this way, they will develop conversational skills and generate new sentences for themselves.

The main topics that will be covered in these years are:

  • Greetings, describing feelings, and farewells.
  • My home, my city.
  • Family members and ages.
  • Preferences including games and sports

Progression

We develop our pupil’s MFL understanding through essential skills; growing their depth of knowledge year after year. We are able to monitor their progress and allocate extra support and adaptations to the curriculum for pupils to maintain a strong MFL education.

SEND Information

We ensure that SEND and disadvantaged children are given the necessary support in class to fully access the MFL Curriculum and equal opportunities are given for all to be confident in approaching any problem within the world around them.
