Year 1 - Badgers

Class Teacher: Miss Ball

Class Teaching Assistant: Mrs Norman

Year 1 is an exciting year full of fun and investigative learning! The children begin to develop important social skills such as independence, resilience and how to be a good friend. Our creative curriculum is heavily based on the arts with daily singing for all pupils both in class and as a whole school as part of our daily worships.

The Year 1 curriculum builds on the experiences that the children have had in Reception and gradually develops a more formal style of learning alongside the continuous provision which the children are used to. This helps to provide a smooth and enjoyable transition from Year R to Year 1.

Year 1 is a particularly important year for developing and consolidating the phonics skills learned in Reception. We prepare for the Phonic Screening Test throughout the year by enjoying daily whole class phonics sessions, colouring activities, singing games, computer games, Alphablocks and home learning activities.

We enjoy weekly trips to our beautiful forest school where we enjoy the outdoors in all weathers and learn to behave safely in a natural environment. We participate in weekly PE sessions with specialist teachers and regularly make use of the immaculate and very popular AstroTurf pitch.

We look forward to welcoming you into Badger Class!

What are we learning about in Term 6?

This term we are learning all about plants! So far we have discussed what plants we already know about and we created an A-Z. Thank you to everyone who helped us fill in the gaps! We have also grown daisy seeds so will keep you updated whilst we look after them. In Science we will be learning about the parts of a plant and their functions, different types of plants including wild flowers and what a plant needs to stay healthy.

In English, our focus book is ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We will be using this as inspiration for our writing, through character descriptions, recounts, instructions and fact files. We have already written what we know about the story and have sequenced the main events. We have also written our own endings to the FEE FI FO FUM chant, explaining what we would do to and Englishman!

In Design Technology, we have so far discussed fruits and vegetables and whether they grow below the ground or above it. We will be tasting salad vegetables then using our evaluations to create our own salad!

We hope the children enjoy the topic this term, and look forward to seeing some lovely learning taking place. Keep an eye on this page for updates!
