Our Weekly Prayer

Song and thought for Monday 15th March – It’s all about you by McFly

It’s all about you (It’s about you)

It’s all about you baby (It’s all about)

It’s all about you (It’s about you)

It’s all about you

Yesterday you asked me

Something I thought

You knew

So I told you with a smile

It’s all about you

Then you whispered in

My ear and

You told me too

Said you made my

Life worthwhile

It’s all about you

And I would answer all

Your wishes

If you asked me to

But if you deny me one

Of your kisses

Don’t know what I’d do

So hold me close and

Say three words like

You used to do

Dancing on the kitchen tiles

It’s all about you, yeah!

And I would answer all

Your wishes

If you asked me to

But if you deny me one

Of your kisses

Don’t know what I’d do

So hold me close and

Say three words like

You used to do

Dancing on the kitchen tiles

Yes you make my

Life worthwhile

So I told you

With a smile

It’s all about you

It’s all about you (It’s about you)

It’s all about you baby (It’s all about)

It’s all about you (It’s about you)

It’s all about you baby (It’s all about)

It’s all about you (It’s about you)

It’s all about you baby (It’s all about)

It’s all about you (It’s about you)

It’s all about you

It’s all about you

Reflect

Actually people, its not all about you! Wake up, you live in a community, you live in a living breathing world. What you do actively impacts on other people and on the earth. It’s not all about you, it’s about us and creation.

It seems ironic, but as we halt business-as-usual to delay the spread of a respiratory virus, that we have, by happy accident, offered Earth a chance to breathe.

Business-as-usual tends to mean flying about in high-speed pursuit of More, Bigger, Faster. It’s an ego-system of competition, comparison and consumerism.

Yet right at this moment, we can’t see the usual cloud of pollution over China from space, for example. It’s gone! And with much of the world grounded or staying home, analysts say we could be in for the first global fall in CO2 emissions since  2008. It’s a shame about the circumstances, clearly – but it does show what can be done if we think a situation is truly an emergency.

So STG, it’s not all about you, its about us. What are you going to change to help our environment?

Pray

Lord Jesus, the earth is yours and you have commanded the winds and the sea;

help us to leave behind our consumer demand for plastics and move towards behaviours that are environmentally healthy; help us to follow your lead in caring for the world you love. We pray in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thought for Thursday 18th March

My brother and my son are asthma sufferers and so I’m all too aware of how scary it can be when our airwaves are restricted and it’s hard to breathe.

Sometimes I think we suffer from a spiritual form of asthma; struggling to get the oxygen of God’s Spirit to our lungs. In fact, breath seems so closely interchangeable with spirit.

If we don’t pause for breath, we tend to suffer in our spirit. A work colleague used to catch me holding my breath at the computer, stressed. “Don’t forget to breathe!” he’d remind me, frequently. And when we do, consciously, take that deeper breath, we return, somehow, from the scramble of thoughts in our head, to our centre.

In Genesis, we read how God breathed into us, and we became a living soul. The wonder is, that just as we’re God-breathed, so God breathed, himself. Consider the singular miracle of Jesus’ very first baby lungful’s: taking air into the body, and God deep into the soul.

Reflect

So STG, in a few quiet moments, why not take some deeper breaths. Give thanks for this greatest gift, of life. Allow, in your imagination, God to do the breathing for you, through you. Let God breathe you into life, in this very moment. Let God breathe.

Pray

Through the Life-Giving Breath of God, we are given all that we need.

Let us breathe deeply— inhaling the good gifts that God provides, and exhaling all of the things that we need to release.

Holy Spirit, let us feel the mighty rush of your presence in this place.  Blow away our fears and worries, and help us to breathe in your gifts of new life. We pray in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
